Small town local bands can be hit or miss, usually missing their mark more often than not, but that’s certainly not the case for Melodic Metalcore band, Foxfollow, out of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Foxfollow has been hitting the Midwest scene hard in the last year, sharing the stage with bands such as Hollow Front, Fit For a King, Sworn In and Phinehas. On October 12th, they released their 5 track EP “Tongues”. This EP follows their 2017 EP release “The Wendigo” and has been met with positive reviews.
The EP starts out with, “Poison”. The previously released single is your straightforward Metalcore song with both clean and screamed vocals, but incorporates some groove in the middle that slows it down a bit. With a catchy chorus in tow, Poison builds anticipation for the last four tracks. Up next is “Swollen”. If you’re not breaking shit within the first 20 seconds, you’re not doing these boys justice. The vocals are especially what draw you in. Between the shrill screams, the lows and the cleans, Swollen defines what Foxfollow is all about. When Derek drops the lines “the world is such a tired place, filled with people who can’t create”, it resonates with you clearly.
Meeting you halfway is “Thieves”. At about :55 seconds, you either want to get low or open the pit. The track comfortably showcases the guitars and bass and has some of the best instrumental work seen on the entire EP. “Unsound” was released alongside a gritty music video in June of 2018. If you’re looking for riffs, there’s no need to look any further. You will also get your breakdown fill, considering the track features arguably the best one on Tongues. All good things must come to an end eventually though, and ‘Wolves” hits before you know it. Although the entire five song EP is great, I have a hard time not playing the closing track on repeat and avoiding the rest. For 3 minutes and 43 seconds, this song sucks you in. Between the spoken lyric segment, the vocals and the instruments, Derek and crew does such a swell job with the musicianship in Wolves, that it paints the picture of what their future will look like in terms of success.
