On their latest album Gwarth II, which dropped on February 7 via Drylands Records, the Detroit tech death metal outfit Thoren have crafted an immersive, teeming soundscape of crushing, entirely instrumental tracks. The band combine straightforward, electrified guitar aggression with chaotic musical spirals, when the whole unified beast of the music sounds like it’s spazzing out down some ominous side quest. Check out an exclusive guitar playthrough below of the new album’s intense song “Raun Raeg”!
This track alternates between death metal riff-lashes and increasingly aggressive frenzy, when the music feels like it’s falling in on itself over and over. The complex intricacy of the songs always builds on the straightforwardly captivating elements, delivering a unified burst of energy. In fact, the music feels quite impressive when the drum rhythm follows right along with the spastic tunes getting performed on the guitar. “Raun Raeg” proves just about irresistibly wild as the energy-driven tension piles up towards the dramatic rhythmic flourishes of the conclusion.
The group features the core members guitarist (and main songwriter) Anthony Lipari (who is featured in the playthrough video) and bassist Joseph Paquette. Gwarth II also features drumming from ex-Pyrrhon member (and Malignancy live drummer) Alex Cohen along with Imperial Triumphant and Secret Chief 3’s own Kenny Grohowski. Their latest album follows Gwarth I, which released in late 2018; the group designed the two albums as immersive companion pieces, and the powerfully frenzied music delivers on that promise perfectly.
